News Archive

The news archive, going back as far as I started archiving it:

  • Friday, February 26th, 2010 — Magical new latest-tweet thingamajigger down there on the left below the copyright.
  • Wednesday, February 24th, 2010sigh One of my MX records was wrong, this had been causing the past two weeks of the email trouble. I doublechecked them so many times, and finally today I noticed a typo. Well, hopefully we're on our way to reinstating the @bipship.com email.
  • Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 — I was poking around good old Cerebral Cortex 314, and I noticed they had several files that were elsewhere unavailable. (Most of these are old, out-of-date things, and I got them just for historical/packrat purposes.) So the Vault has become slightly larger, though still needs some more work. There also seemed to be some old levelpacks there that weren't on Beyond the Pogo, and so not on this site.
  • Monday, February 22nd, 2010 — I noticed I'd been inconsistent in my writing of the word levelpack/level pack. What I realized was the instances of the word(s) written earlier had the space in the middle. When I wrote the word more recently, it had no space. So I thrillingly went through my site and replaced all of the two-word instances with levelpack as one word. Can you tell there's not much new going on?
  • Thursday, February 18th, 2010 — Added disk image, disk contents, and installed game for Keen 1 version 1.32 to the Collective. (This seems to be a repackaging of version 1.31 included as a bonus on a Gravis GamePad utility disk.) Also added disk image and disk contents for Keen 6 version 1.0.
  • Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 — My @bipship.com email address is STILL not working yet. I've fiddled around with several different things with Google Apps. The main issue is that there is a waiting period of a couple of days after each step, so I can't tell right away if something is working. Still for now I suppose.
  • Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 — Finally! My normal email address seems to be back up and running! This took way too long. Urrgggghh. Honestly Update. Crap, I lied. It's still broken. What is this even I don't
  • Thursday, February 4th, 2010 — Just a little pre-warning thing. At some point in the next couple of days, I'm going to reconfiguring my Google Apps things. When I do, my main email address will be broken. I've had another address (that essentially points to the same place) for some time now but have never actually mentioned it I don't think. Please use this one until further notice. When the old one is usable again, another news item will appear, but you can still continue to use the new one if you want. It really won't matter. Update. It's waiting time. I am currently waiting for the Bipship.com Google Apps account to be completely erased so I can add Bipship.com as an alias for TL-DR.org. There's nothing else I can really do about this for the time being. The wait will potentially be for several days. Still waiting as of Feb 9. This is pretty frustrating. Update Feb 10. Somewhat progress, not complete success, though. I'll keep you posted.
  • Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 — I have now officially sold out and gotten a Twitter. This may or may not be a super successful endeavor, in that I may or may not update this often with interesting things. Regardless, you may find it here.
  • Sunday, January 31st, 2010 — Retroactive-by-one-day news. Added the First section, which shows Keeners' first posts on the forums, whether it be on the ezBoard PCKF, Keen: Modding, or the phpBB PCKF. So far, all of these except for gerstrong's were found by Mink. Thanks, Mink! He seems to have an uncanny ability/patience to find stuff on the old forums. This section will hopefully be gradually added to, and any help in digging up old posts would be appreciated!
  • Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 — New Remakes section on the site. This contains graphics remakes for Commander Keen, i.e., new graphics without new levels. Zorath's SGA trilogy has been moved from Mods to this new section, and a few other remakes from Beyond the Pogo were also added.
  • Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 — The other day I finally added the rest of the stuff that had still been missing from the Keen Collective. What's new now are disk images of some of the versions. These aren't contents of disks zipped up, these are actual .img files that can be used to recreate the original disks bit for bit. Clearly, these are for total nerds/completionists. In other boring news, we now only show the last few (currently three, but this might be subject to change) news items on the main page. The rest (well, as many as I have saved) are available on a separate News Archive page.
  • Thursday, January 21st, 2010 — Finally added the remaining levelpacks from Beyond the Pogo that I had been missing. The next tidying step is probably going to be the 'Collective. I'm slightly not looking forward to it. I also (I hope) fixed a rather strange bug with my sites, involving downloads being cut off early. Somehow the manual Content-Length header I was sending for downloads was interacting with the new-ish addition of automatic gzip compression I was putting on my site. I'm not sure exactly what files this was affecting. Maybe just ones that gzip encoding made longer? (Hopefully the minority of the files.) Anyway immediate symptoms seem to be gone.
  • Thursday, January 14th, 2010 — I'm an idiot. An SQLite / file permissions problem that I've been having with my site was 99% not actually there, and I've been slamming into the 1% for two weeks, wondering what the hell was going on. OH WAIT IT'S ALMOST ENTIRELY NOT A PROBLEM, AND THE PART THAT IS A PROBLEM IS EASILY WORKED AROUND DUUUUHHHH
  • Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 — I return from the dead, bringing with me many many behind-the-scenes changes. Hello, all. It's certainly good to be back! Not everything's up and running 100% yet, so bear with me for a bit while I sort things out.
  • Saturday, March 14th, 2009Happy Keen Day 2009, everyone! There have been some pretty major behind-the-scenes changes going on here in the past day. (That they're behind-the-scenes means that I'll find them a lot more interesting than anyone else will. ) Many of the files that were previously on bipship.com have migrated over to tl-dr.org, although they're still linked from here. The archive, mods, levelpacks, and Keen collective sections all look pretty much the same as they always have, but if you put your mouse over the download links, you'll see they now point to http://www.tl-dr.org/downloads/keen/... instead of http://www.bipship.com/... This change was made so that I can manage all of the files from one place, instead of having to re-write much of the same code in many different places for uploading/modifying files in different sections of the site. As far as tl-dr.org is concerned, the files linked to from bipship.com are served exactly the same as any of its other files. For convenience and saving storage space, all of these files are (and have been for a while) actually stored in MySQL databases rather than actual files. Anyway, boring news item, but updating this has been fun for me. I've learned a bit more about MySQL since writing all of these things the first time, so I've been able to re-write them with the MySQL requests doing a lot more of the textual manipulation work, instead of PHP doing it.
  • Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 — Two aspects of my online presence (Keen-related and non-Keen-related, i.e., CK Guy and ACF, etc.) are now officially connected. Bipship.com (the center for Keen-related activities) now links (via the Who Am I page) to TL-DR.org (the center for non-Keen-related activities), and vice versa. Also, as I am in the process of updating some things, files.bipship.com will be hosted on TL-DR.org for a little while.
  • Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 — Happy belated new year! The other day I found the remaining old versions of Mindbelt/CKludge on a USB drive, and uploaded them to the Archive. I also found the source code for many of them, so up those went as well. Now, I was wrong before about stuff being 'lost forever', but this time I'm almost 100% positive that I don't have the source for the other versions hanging around anywhere.
  • Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 — The last couple weeks have seen several as-of-yet unannounced changes. One of these is the new Levelpacks section, which is currently a partial mirror of the levelpacks available from dosclassics.com. Also new is the Upload section, where you can upload any file up to five megabytes. I'm interested to know how well this works for people.
  • Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 — New mods section. It's a barebones mirror of The Garg's Mod Maze, in case KeenRush decides to redo his site, and leave us with no mod repository for months. Also: The Archive now contains tons of stuff, most of which you're probably not that interested in.
  • Friday, October 31st, 2008 — Ka-CHUNK! New Articles section to replace the old tl;dr system. This time we're using a real database instead of a big text file. (Happy Halloween!)
  • Thursday, October 30th, 2008 — I managed to scrounge up MODLATCH 1.1 and its source code from archive.org. You can find it in my archive. The Archive, incidentally, now contains a lot more stuff, notably old versions of my level pack, and all of the official Keen downloads and version patches from spatang/dosclassics and elsewhere.
